Business entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast, Leon Whitehouse, decided to return to education as a mature student at Truro College and now runs a successful sports massage therapy and personal training business called, Innovate4Life. Leon began his journey by studying for an Access to Higher Education course in Science to give him good grounding to progress to the FdSc Exercise, Health and Fitness course.
Initially wary about returning to education later in life, Leon was impressed with the support and facilities available to make the transition as easy as possible. He said: “The College gave me everything I needed to get me through my degree programme, I wasn’t too sure that it would be possible as a mature student but I was greatly supported by the tutors and my classmates too.”
Taking a step towards the goal of running his own business, Leon engaged with the Spark business start-up project in the second year of his degree, aiming to get advice, mentoring and financial support to help make his business idea a reality.
Leon’s business, Innovate4Life, offers solutions to combat aches and pains and maintain general wellbeing by providing services such as soft tissue therapy, personal training and rehabilitation for those with muscular or skeletal injuries. The business supports a variety of people who are struggling to move, ranging from everyday injuries to athlete improvement, believing that he can improve their results by up to 5%.
This assortment of clientele was influenced by the experience gained throughout his Foundation Degree, where Leon learnt to tackle exercise, health and fitness based problems with confidence. “For me, what I liked about the Foundation Degree was working for both people who have no idea about any kind of health or wellbeing, all the way up to training athletes.”
Leon realised that he had to follow a career path that made him happy so he created a business where he would enjoy working every day and hasn’t looked back since. He said: “A lot of people get stuck being unhappy in their work, but they feel that they can’t stop that income stream and they don’t want to take that leap, but I would just say go for it, because you can turn your idea into a reality.”
